From the movie "Dead Poet's Society" as the character Keating..."
"We don't read and write poetry, create art because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are WHAT WE STAY ALIVE FOR... To quote from Whitman, "O me! O life!... of the questions of these recurring; of the endless trains of the faithless... of cities filled with the foolish; what good amid these, O me, O life?" Answer. That you are here - that life exists, and identity; that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse. That the powerful play 'goes on' and you may contribute a verse.
What will your verse be?"
His VERSE was great, genius, influential and astounding...
It is such a profound statement to see someone who truly lived his life according to his vision, no matter his ups and downs and mistakes ... as comedian, actor, humanitarian, father, husband, political voice, poet, artist and a man... it is so profound and sad a statement to life in our society, seeing someone like this, end his own life as he "battled depression"... How could he be so depressed? Surrounded by seemingly SO much positive? I feel that this kind of of hyper-emotional, artistic genius is in need of being fed and validated,... as it sees the beauty and potential in life and people... If not fed and validated... then it might feel quite empty, alone and even crazy as it questions its very own nature. Even when its own nature is to just express the genuine love of life it feels and sees.
Many of us have different "heroes" in life that we have looked to and admired for their contributions to our own environment and sensibilities... be it actually our parents who have raised us, to the great friends and family who have helped us with our life, ... to a great, artistic genius who is reaching out to us through different mediums of communication.
Robin Williams was one of my heroes... from his political views, the lack of his mental "switch" to speak his mind, ...to some of the characters he has played and expressed some deep and poignant message... to just all out making us laugh at the comedy of life. I admired him as greatly as I do Da Vinci or Van Gough.
We are all just human... but "beauty, romance, love" ... the connections to each other and the sharing of our experiences with each other in a positive way. Sharing so we DON'T feel like we are always going it alone... and to NOT feel like we are to be judged by our ups and downs that we ALL have... to whatever their degree. To be validated in our own positive potential as well as in others. To exist, live, love and be loved for who we are... all the while recognizing this for each other as we get caught up in our "noble pursuits, sustaining ourselves", making all that time we sacrifice to sustain, worthwhile...
It is "WHAT WE STAY ALIVE FOR."
Simple ... beauty, love, touch, friendship, kinship, family, recognition and all the "art and poetry and comedy" all of that creates for us.
"The powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse"...
Contribute a "verse" that inspires another to contribute to your "play" and therefore your "verse."
What will your verse be?
